The Quaich can be used in different ways during a wedding ceremony.
The Quaich represents trust. The two handed nature of the Quaich means that the drinker can not be holding a weapon while they are drinking, and the sharing of the cup proves that there is no poison.
The most common tradition is used to represent the combining of two families. As the bride arrives at the alter, the bride's mother pours a serve of drink into a Quaich. The mother then hands the Quaich to the bride's father who takes a drink. He then hands the Quaich to the groom who drinks and passes it to his bride. Once the bride has drunk from the cup she then passes the Quaich to the groom's father who is the last to drink before passing to the Groom's mother.
Another tradition is to use the Quaich at the end of the ceremony. The bride pours a drink into the Quaich, she takes a drink and hands it to her new husband who drinks also. It symolises their first symbol of union, and their tied bond.
